Health and Safety

Health and Safety

Our key objective is for every employee to go home healthy and safe after every shift. Our efforts aim to ensure high standards of safety and well-being of the workforce through commitment to safeguarding and educating our employees and contractors and applying safe work systems.

We have designed and implemented occupational health & safety systems and procedures, in compliance with international best practices, as well as local legislation and licence and permit conditions.

Egypt

The health and safety system is based on setting annual occupational health and safety plans, training of employees, raising awareness and performance monitoring. The system is supported by a robust documentation system that ensures the maintenance of required registers, documents and renewal of required permits.

We incorporate risk assessment procedures into all our operations and activities. We analyse the probability for a hazard to progress to an actual loss event, as well as the likely consequences of such an event.

Our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (per 200,000 hours worked) has reduced significantly over recent years and we continue to target a zero-harm safety record.

Facilities on-site

We maintain a well-equipped on-site clinic, which runs 24/7, for both general health and emergency related services and is managed by a doctor and qualified nurse. An ambulance is available and the clinic can respond to emergency situations.

Tracking Health and Safety Performance

A core element of our management system is to assess performance and identify areas for improvement. We have formulated a multi-functional system which monitors our health and safety performance through:

Evaluating the workplace environment for potential hazards to occupational health
Evaluating the stability of structures
Periodic alcohol and/or drug testing
Ensuring that safety procedures and standards are adhered to

In the event of an incident, a comprehensive Incident Investigation and Reporting System is followed to analyse the root causes and provide recommendations for remedial actions.

Burkina Faso

The Company’s health, safety and environmental policies and standards have been integrated into the Batie West operations in Burkina Faso.

These include:
Provision of health services at camp;
Training and induction requirements;
Incident investigation and reporting procedures;
Internal communication mechanisms;
Vehicle safety requirements;
Contractor management; and
Compliance with the code of conduct and anti-bribery policies.

Facilities on-site

The Batie West camp site has a well‑equipped clinic, accessible to employees 24/7, with a full‑time paramedic and an ambulance. Through applying protective measures and employee awareness programmes, the malaria frequency rate remains significantly lower than the country frequency rate in Burkina Faso as a whole.

Côte d’Ivoire

The Company’s health, safety and environmental policies and standards have been integrated into the Côte d’Ivoire operations.

These include:
Provision of health services at camp;
Training and induction requirements;
Incident investigation and reporting procedures;
