Egypt

Early recognition of potential environmental impacts from mining operations is essential. At Sukari, incorporating relevant indicators at the project design stage helped to avoid, prevent and mitigate potential environmental impacts and build effective controls into our facilities.

The environment is assessed, managed and protected in all phases from exploration, through to development, mining and processing activities.  We are committed to maintaining and where possible enhancing the high level of environmental performance that we have reached.

Restoration and Rehabilitation
Centamin is committed to leave a positive legacy for coming generations and thus we plan early for the closure of the mine. A restoration and rehabilitation plan is updated and refined annually, which aims to ensure that:

mining activities are soundly phased out,
the mine is closed in an environmentally sound manner,
a physically and chemically stable landform is maintained, with minimal erosion and minimal potential for dust generation, and
hazards are reduced to levels equal to or below those naturally existing within the surrounding environment.

The plan includes a provision in the annual budget, equivalent to the estimated present value of the expenditure required to settle the restoration obligation.
We also undertake short-term rehabilitation activities specifically for construction sites and for operational clean-up procedures.

Burkina Faso

Rehabilitation during exploration

An important component of exploration activities is the rehabilitation of sites. There are procedures to ensure the safe, stable and environmentally sound closure of pits and wells immediately after completion of works. Drilling contractors are required to implement such procedures at all their drilling sites.
