The region of West Africa in which Centamin operates is underlain by sequences with the Birimian terrane of the West African craton.
These rock units, which extend through Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali and Ghana, are major sources of gold and comprise a mix of metamorphosed volcanic, sedimentary and plutonic rocks.
Centamin’s permits in the northeast of Côte d’Ivoire are underlain by predominantly granitoid units adjacent to the southwest margin of the Boromo Greenstone belt. Structural trends are similar to those of certain prospects within Burkina Faso, e.g. Napelepera
